I recently bought a boat [original name Sherbang] from ipswich that was sold to me as a Gem. It looks pretty Gem like but I'm not 100% sure it is one. it's main departure is the fairly light dagger board which is GRP with lead in the bottom part in addition to internal hull ballast bolted in either side of the dagger board case. The dagger board is easily lifted via a 4:1 purchase lead out to a cleat in the cockpit. The dagger board and lift system looks professionally built and not a conversion from the more normal cast iron job. Inside is a plywood only superstructure. I have pictures but no way to post them. My main reason for assessing what design it is, is to ensure I am racing to the most benificial handicap in the local fleet!

That's the typical gem's bottom!
I think the one you ve got flew, is a Jones 18. An English design of the year 1980. _________________ When the seagulls are walking, it's time to tack! |

Chris,
Have a visit in Manningtree this week-end, all Gems and Jones 18 of the club should be on the water for their "Micro Championship"
The opening on top of the transom is clearly like a Jones, but I'd never seen pictures from the side or of the inner accommodation, so I cannot advise further. _________________

My Shanta has no bulb as a standard, but should have one next year.
When your boat is a quarter of a century old, everything may have been changed, a bulb keel made flush to have a lower boat on the trailer is possible. _________________

The boat is sold to a German owner, and was present at the Micr'Eau d'Heure 2008.
Clearly slower than a GEM, similar to a Sailart 18.
As the boat is believed to be a production of 10 or more and all dimensions are within Cruisers specifications, the topic was moved to the "Cruisers" section _________________
